A Barossa wine tour hens day: how to plan it

Published By Barossa Wine Tours

A private Barossa wine tour is one of the easiest hens party ideas near Adelaide: the whole group travels together in one vehicle, nobody has to drive, and the day is built around the bride. With Barossa Wine Tours a private day is $250 per person (minimum two guests), our vehicle seats up to eight, and we pick up door-to-door from Barossa accommodation, with Adelaide pickup available on request. Tell Kirsty the date, the numbers and the vibe, and she plans the cellar doors and lunch around you.

Not every bride wants a big night out. Some would rather spend a relaxed day with their favourite people, and the Barossa is close enough for it: about an hour from Adelaide (SATC). A wine day gives you a bit of everything: good wine, a long lunch, scenery for photos, and time to actually talk. Here is how to plan one that the bride will remember for the right reasons.

Why a wine tour works for a hens day

  • Nobody drives. The maid of honour does not have to stay sober or organise a convoy of cars. Door-to-door pickup is included on every tour.
  • The group stays together. One vehicle means one group: no waiting at the next cellar door for the car that took a wrong turn.
  • It is all planned for you. The organiser has enough on their plate. A local guide books the cellar doors, times the day and builds in lunch.
  • It suits mixed groups. Mums, aunties, school friends and work friends can all enjoy a wine day, including the ones who would rather sip than skol.

Private, gin or from Adelaide: which day suits your hens?

Private Barossa wine tour$250 per person, minimum 2A day built around the bride: your wineries or Kirsty's boutique picks, with a lunch stop built in
Barossa gin tour$225 per personGroups where half love wine and half love gin. Lunch included, 10am to 4pm
Wine tour from AdelaideFrom $250 per personHens staying in the city: pickup around 9am, back by about 5pm, lunch included

Prices and inclusions as published on our tour pages. Any cellar-door or distillery fees not listed are confirmed when you book.

For most hens groups the private tour is the one, because the whole vehicle and the itinerary are yours. There are no other guests along for the ride, so the inside jokes, the sash and the playlist debates stay within the group.

How many can come?

Our tours travel in a luxury 8-passenger vehicle, so a group of up to eight fits in one go. That is a nice size for a hens wine day: big enough to feel like a party, small enough that cellar doors can look after you properly. If your guest list is bigger than eight, call Kirsty before you book and talk it through.

Private tours start at a minimum of two guests, so the size of the group is up to you.

What a Barossa hens day looks like

Every private day is different, but a typical hens day runs something like this:

  1. Morning pickup. We collect the group door-to-door from your accommodation at a time that suits. Staying in Adelaide? Pickup from the city can be arranged on request.
  2. A cellar door or two. Unhurried tastings at small, family-owned wineries, often with the maker on hand.
  3. Lunch. A lunch stop is easily built into a private day: a long table, a few toasts, and time for speeches or games if you have planned them.
  4. The afternoon. More tastings, or a gin distillery if the group likes a G&T, before we drop everyone back at the door.

Want something special for the bride, like her favourite style of wine, a winery with a view for photos, or a quieter stop for the older guests? Tell Kirsty when you book and she will shape the day around it.

Tips for planning a hens wine tour

Book early, especially for a Saturday

Weekends are the busy time in the Barossa, and South Australia's tourism body advises visitors to book restaurants, tastings and transport ahead on weekends (SATC). Once you have a date, lock in the tour first and build the rest of the weekend around it.

Think about where you will stay

Turning it into a weekend away? Staying in the valley means a short pickup and no long drive home. Our guide to the Barossa towns compares Tanunda, Nuriootpa, Angaston and Lyndoch as a base.

Pace the day

Tastings add up. According to the Department of Health, a 150 ml restaurant glass of red wine at 13.5% is about 1.6 standard drinks (health.gov.au). Eat a proper breakfast, drink water between cellar doors, and use the spittoon or pour bucket when you have had enough. You will enjoy the afternoon (and the evening) more. Our wine tasting tips cover cellar-door etiquette and what to wear.

Keep the props sensible

Sashes, matching shirts and a few games are part of the fun. Cellar doors are working businesses and often have other guests tasting, so keep the louder games for lunch or the vehicle, and check with Kirsty if you are planning anything big.

Everyone needs to be 18 or over to drink

We are committed to the responsible service of alcohol, and guests must be 18 or older to drink on tour. If someone in the group is not drinking, let Kirsty know when you book.

What does a hens wine tour cost?

A private Barossa day is $250 per person, the gin tour is $225 per person, and the Adelaide day tour is from $250 per person. Any cellar-door tasting fees are confirmed when you book, so there are no surprises on the day.
